We Love to Share – Get Professional Tips of the Trade

This Landscaping for Idaho seminar was taught by Jordan at the 2023 Boise Flower and Garden show

Don’t Trust Tags

Plant info tags are mass produced and not usually printed for our unique Idaho environment. At our garden center we group our plants to show which species may be more sensitive to Idaho conditions. That doesn’t mean they won’t thrive. They just may be suited for a more sheltered location. The right plant in the right place should always be the goal.

Know Your Zone

Although the USDA recently raised our zone to a 6A, 6B and even 7A in Boise, Jordan would respectfully disagree. This zoning would suggest we don’t fall below -10, -5 or even 0 degrees in some places. While rare extremely cold winters DO hit Boise regularly. Remember too that it is not only how cold it gets, but how FAST it can get that cold, as well as wind and heat. Hardier plants are better suited to handle drastic drops in temperature. Know your area and your plants. We have experts that can help.

Plant Shallow

More plants are killed by being planted too deep and roots being suffocated by our thick Idaho soils.

Check The Soil For Water

Overwatering is the most common lethal mistake made to new plants. Plant roots need to breath. If you can feel moisture in the soil, so can the plant. Stick a screwdriver or pencil into the soil. If you can see moist soil sticking to it when you pull it out the plant is still ok.

Choose Your Spots

There is no bad spot in a yard. There are challenging spots for sure, but there is a right plant for every spot. Usually the problem is water, either too much or not enough. It is almost never an acidic soil problem in Idaho.
